A 55-year-old Troy bicyclist, Patrick J. Mikes, was reported missing by his 16 and 21-year-old sons on July 27th. The following Sunday, July 29th, Mikes’ eldest son was taken into police custody where he was being held behind bars for questioning.
According to reports, investigators believed there had been an assault in the basement of the family’s home. However, the 16-year-old son of the missing man was the only one willing to speak openly with police. Andrew Mikes was cleared of any involvement in the disappearance of Patrick Mikes. The 21-year-old, who shares his father’s name, requested a lawyer according to Troy Police Captain Robert Redmond.
Michigan criminal defense attorneys know that those who are suspected of assault, murder or any offense are innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. While Patrick Mikes Jr. has not been charged with the disappearance of his father, he is a suspect in the violent assault that took place in the basement of the family’s home, according to Redmond. The older sibling was charged, however, with fraud after stealing Andrew Mikes’ credit card.
Both Patrick and Andrew Mikes told police their father left the family home on his bicycle, a black and red Cannondale SuperSix bike, on Friday the 27th around 5:30 p.m. The day prior to Patrick Mikes disappearance, Mikes Jr. made purchases at the AMC Star Theatre at Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills and a Johnny Rockets restaurant using his younger brother’s credit card. A Rochester Hills district judge set Mikes’ bond at $50,000 after he was charged with three felonies.
Mikes Jr. is considered violent and potentially dangerous by police, which is why a high bond amount was set. A neighbor of the Mikes stated that she couldn’t believe either of the boys would be involved in Mikes’ disappearance.
On August 4th, news reports stated that Troy police are now searching for Mikes in the Genesee County area, specifically the Flint River in Montrose. It is also believed that the last day Mikes was seen in the family home was on Thursday July 26th, not Friday as originally reported. Mikes Jr. was observed on video at a local store on Friday the 27th, reportedly purchasing a large quantity of cleaning supplies.
